Medicare Guidelines

OXYGEN

• O2 qualification (ABG or O2 Sat) must be performed within 2 days prior to set-up if patient is being discharged from a hospital. If the order is not assocated with a hospitalization, the ABG or O2 saturation must be performed within 30 days prior to the delivery.

• PaO2 less than, or equal to 55 or an O2 saturation of less than, or equal to 88%

• The oxygen supplier cannot perform patient qualification for oxygen.

• Liter flows and hours per day must be specified by the ordering physician (PRN only orders are not reimbursable by Medicare).

CPAP/BiPAP

• A sleep study must be performed demonstrating an apnea hypopnea index greater than, or equal to, 15 events per hour, or 5 – 14 events per hour with evidence of daytime sleepiness, impaired cognition, mood disorders, insomnia; or hypertension ischemic heart disease or history of stroke.

NEBULIZERS

• Must have an appropriate respiratory diagnosis (e.g., asthma, COPD). Specify unit dose medication if desired.
